The Fault in Our Stars
is the fourth novel by author John Green, published in January 2012.
The story is narrated by a sixteen-year-old cancer patient named Hazel,
who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she
subsequently meets and falls in love with the seventeen-year-old
Augustus Waters, an ex-basketball player and amputee.
The
title is inspired by a famous line from Shakespeare's play Julius
Caesar (act 1, scene 2). The nobleman Cassius says to Brutus: "The
fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are
underlings."
In January 2012, the film rights to the
book were optioned by Fox 2000,[1] and on February 19, 2013, it was
announced that Josh Boone would be directing the film. It is set to star
Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff.
Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for
the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their
relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other
constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic
leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.
